BIO ULTRA FILTER MEDIA
Overview: Bio Retention Filter Media (BRFM) is a specialized type of filtration material commonly used in stormwater management systems to treat runoff water before it is released into the environment. It serves as a key component in bio-retention systems, which are designed to mimic natural filtration processes by using plants, soil, and other filter media to remove pollutants from stormwater.
Purpose and Function: The primary purpose of Bio Retention Filter Media is to treat stormwater runoff by removing contaminants such as sediments, nutrients (e.g., nitrogen and phosphorus), heavy metals, and other pollutants. This is achieved through a combination of physical filtration, biological uptake by plants, and chemical processes. Typically designed at a depth of 400mm-600mm or as specified by an engineer.
Key Benefits:
- Pollution Removal: Effectively reduces pollutants from stormwater, including sediment, nutrients, heavy metals, and organic compounds.
- Improved Water Quality: Helps improve the overall water quality in nearby rivers, lakes, or streams, making it more suitable for aquatic life and reducing eutrophication risks.
- Sustainable Solution: Bio retention systems are environmentally friendly, using natural processes to treat water rather than relying on chemical additives or energy-intensive methods.
- Stormwater Management: Helps in controlling the volume and quality of stormwater runoff, preventing flooding and reducing the burden on municipal water treatment systems.
- Erosion Control: The vegetation in bio-retention areas can help stabilize the soil and prevent erosion, improving land stability.
Components of Bio Ultra Filter Media:
Bio Ultra is a specifically blended mix of sandy loams and organic matter which is designed to ensure the balance of filtration and retention. The organic matter plays a crucial part in nutrient removal and provides a habitat for microbes that help degrade contaminants.
Our Bio Ultra meets the FAWB (Facility for Advancing Water Biofiltration) requirements as well as Water By Design Guidelines (WSUD) & Healthly Waterways.
Applications:
- Urban Stormwater Management: Bio retention systems are commonly used in urban areas to manage the runoff from roads, parking lots, and buildings.
- Green Infrastructure Projects: Often used in conjunction with green infrastructure initiatives aimed at enhancing sustainability and promoting environmental stewardship.
- Construction Sites: Used to mitigate pollution runoff during construction or land development projects.
Maintenance: Though bio-retention systems are relatively low-maintenance, they do require periodic checks to ensure that the vegetation remains healthy, the media does not become clogged, and that the system continues to function effectively. Maintenance may include:
- Replenishing organic material.
- Pruning or replacing vegetation.
- Ensuring that the filter media does not become compacted or clogged with debris.
Environmental Impact: By enhancing natural filtration, Bio Retention Filter Media helps to minimize the negative impacts of urban development on water quality, reduces flooding, and promotes biodiversity through the incorporation of plants into the system.
This solution is increasingly being adopted as cities and municipalities seek sustainable, effective ways to manage stormwater and improve environmental outcomes.
TRANSITION LAYER SAND
Our high-quality Transition Layer Sand is specifically designed to enhance water infiltration and filtration. This sand layer helps facilitate the smooth transition between the filtration media and drainage gravel to avoid any migration, ensuring efficient water management in stormwater systems. Typically running at a 100-150mm depth or as specified by your engineer.
Our Transition Layer sand meets the FAWB bridging criteria between the Filter Media and the Transition Layer Sand and is a well graded 2mm sand that comes with its own certification certificate.
DRAINAGE GRAVEL
The drainage gravel layer of the Bio Basins typically consists of a 5mm clean fine gravel at a depth of 150mm-200mm to cover over the drainage pipe or as specified by the engineer.
The drainage gravel is design to collect treated water at the bottom of the Bio Retention system and relay the treated water to under drain pipes.

What sets Substrate Soils apart from other suppliers is the capabilities and knowledge to source and supply all products and installation needs from the start to finish of the Bio Retention Basin if required.
What this means for you…
- For the complete project needs – In house Estimator – Provide quotes on supply, deliver and installation of all products for your basin. This includes the final stages of planting and turf.
- For the contractor – Our team will take care of the supply and deliver of all 3 layers of material on time and in full. Plants and turf can be sourced and supplied if required.
Our team can help with any and all stages of your Bio Retention Basin projects. At Substrate Soils our main objective is to provide everything you need with ease, making us the one stop shop for your project.
SPORTS FIELDS BLENDS
We are currently working with sports field consultants to manufacture a premium sports field turf blend that can be used as an under turf for any large or small sports field developments as well as the use in parks and recreational areas.
The product is a double washed sandy loam with a Hydraulic Conductivity range of 150mm – 600mm per hour that is free from weeds, contaminants, no recycled materials used in the manufacture and is easy to spread and screed on site.
We are more than happy to work with our clients to blend a product that is tailor made to your needs and requirements as well and be cost effective for your budget.
